Maternal psychological well-being and its role in child development

Abstract. A mother’s psychological state is a crucial factor determining a child’s emotional, cognitive, and social development in early childhood. This article examines the impact of maternal experiences — joy, anxiety, and stress — on the development of children under 5 years of age. Particular attention is paid to phenomena such as postpartum depression and chronic stress, as well as their consequences for children’s health and behavior. The analysis is based on the results of modern scientific research, surveys of mothers, and observations of their interactions with their children. It has been found that a mother’s emotional state directly influences her child: a positive outlook promotes confidence and cognitive activity, while stress can inhibit speech development, disrupt emotional connection, and affect the child’s hormonal balance.
The article also discusses the role of support from family, friends, and specialists in mitigating negative effects and strengthening the mother’s psychological well-being. The authors offer practical recommendations for mothers, healthcare professionals, and social services to improve the psychoemotional health of families. Caring for a mother’s mental health is an investment in her child’s health and future.
