Abstract. The article examines the chameleon effect as the unconscious imitation of a conversation: partner’s posture, gestures, facial expressions, and speech patterns during social interaction. It shows that this phenomenon has deep historical and neurobiological roots, with mirror neurons and the perception-behavior link providing its basic mechanism. Drawing on the research of T. Chartrand and J. Bargh, the article highlights the automatic nature of mimicry and its role in creating liking, trust, and psychological comfort. Special attention is given to the effect of the chameleon effect on interpersonal relationships, marital similarity, teamwork, negotiations, and customer service. The article also analyzes both the advantages and risks of mimicry, including possible manipulation, cultural inappropriateness, and reinforcement of group differences. In conclusion, practical recommendations are offered for using this mechanism in everyday communication with moderation, naturalness, and respect for the interlocutor.
