The role of self-education and self-development in teacher professional development

Abstract. This article emphasizes that teachers’ self-education and self-development are key factors in their professional growth and the development of well-rounded students. Self-education is a teacher’s conscious effort to expand their knowledge, master innovative methods, and refine their teaching skills. Self-development encompasses personal growth, including reflection, strengthening emotional resilience, and developing responsiveness. These processes allow teachers not only to meet high professional standards but also to inspire students, shaping their worldview and values.
In the era of digitalization of education, demands on teachers are rapidly increasing. They must master digital tools—from interactive platforms to online courses — and also develop soft skills such as communication, adaptability, and teamwork. The authors, analyzing sources, identify the following forms of self-education: participation in seminars, studying scientific publications, sharing experiences in professional communities, and independent learning. Teacher motivation, driven by the desire to grow and influence the future, becomes the foundation of these processes.
However, teachers face serious challenges: lack of time, high workload, and emotional burnout. To overcome these challenges, they propose time management, peer support, and access to educational resources. Ultimately, self-education and self-development not only strengthen professional competencies but also make teachers’ work meaningful, inspiring, and significant, allowing them to contribute to the development of society and the formation of the next generation.
